Anurag Basu’s Murder, which released in 2004, turned out to be a game-changer not only for its lead cast Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat but also for singer Kunal Ganjawala, who crooned the steamy song Bheegey Hont Tere, which is still popular among the masses. While it turned out to be a rage among the audience, Kunal was quite apprehensive to sing the song because of its lyrics. Talking to Zoom Digital, he said, “Mei yeh lyrics sunke bahut darr gaya tha. This was because of the words. I did not know who was in the film. I was not given enough time. I was called to sing quietly in a very hush fashion. I was very worried when I was writing those lyrics. I asked for a reharsal but they said no reharsal and slammed. I prayed and said man I did not even pray for anything. Why have you given me this? Why are you punishing me”?
Kunal Ganjawala, who finished the song in one take said, “I spent only about 20 minutes with this song. I did not realise that it was not a run-of-a-mill kind of a song. From the time I came in the studio, wrote the lyrics and I just got one shot to record it. I was not the original choice for this song from the Vishesh Bhatt camp. I was not in anyone’s purview except for Mr Anu Malik’s purview. It was never my dream to be a playback singer. I had no idea that music would be a career as it was not an option. I did not know I could sing”.
Post this song emerged a huge hit, he was called an ‘Adult Pop Star’. Talking about that, Kunal said, “Very early on in my career, I used to audition and never hear back from them. I was told that I do not sound like anybody. If I had to sing a Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar or Rafi song you had to sound like them in a far off vicinity. He has got an attitude which is very young and is not like other legends. The first question that I used to be asked in auditions was whom would I sing like? I used to say I sing like myself and not like anybody. AR Rahman cast me on O Hum Dum as it was a really cool boy-man kind of a band song. That is why he had Shaan, KK and me singing in it. Ajay-Atul gave me a lot of songs as they wrote and composed the same. Even Shankar-Ehsaan Loy had written very cool songs for me like from “Kyun! Ho Gaya Na”.
